Close, Garcia bring Nobbs to the screen

Multi Oscar nominee Glenn Close is to reprise one of her most famous stage roles on screen. She will star in, co-produce and has co-scripted costume drama Albert Nobbs, which London-based WestEnd Films is selling in Berlin.

Rodrigo Garcia, who directed Close in Nine Lives and Things You Can Tell Just By Looking At Her, will direct the film, a screen version of Broadway hit The Singular Life Of Albert Nobbs which won Close an Obie award in the 1980s. Shooting is set to start in July.

Orlando Bloom, Michael Gambon and Janet McTeer have been lined up to co-star in the film which Close is producing with Bonnie Curtis and Julie Lynn.

Set in a luxury hotel in Dublin, Albert Nobbs is a Gosford Park-style “below stairs” drama featuring Close as a woman in Nineteenth Century Ireland who disguises herself as a man in order to survive. The celebrated actress has said that Nobbs will be “the challenge” of her career. “I believe in this story and its potential to take everyone on a sensuous, funny, heart-breaking ride,” Close commented.

Albert Nobbs marks the second collaboration between WestEnd and Garcia following their partnership on the critically acclaimed Mother and Child.

Glenn Close to reprise gender swap stage role in Irish film

It's an enduring attraction. Glenn Close, the American actress best known for her role as the stalker in Fatal Attraction, is hoping to fulfil a long-term ambition by making a film based on a screenplay by John Banville, the Booker prize-winning novelist.

Close has spent almost two decades securing finance and finding a director and producer to make The Singular Life of Albert Nobbs, the story of a poverty-stricken woman in 1860s Ireland who disguises herself as a man to gain employment.

The film is inching closer to production after Close enlisted Bonnie Curtis, who worked with her on a recent film, The Chumscrubber, to produce and Rodrigo Garcia, who collaborated with her on another recent film, Nine Lives, to direct.

The script is based on a short story by George Moore, the 19th-century Irish author who has been described as the country’s first great modern novelist. It is supposedly based on a true story. A screenplay by Istvan Szabo, the acclaimed Hungarian writer/director, has been exchanged for a new script by Banville, who says Close is eager to retain the “Irishness” of the original story. “It’s quite an unusual project for a Hollywood actress to pursue for so long with such passion,” he said.

Banville was recommended to Close by Stephen Frears, the English director.

Close played the role of Nobbs in a stage version of the story in the early 1980s in New York, winning an Obie award, and reprised the role in London’s West End. She has been trying to transform the story into a film since then.

When she starred in the stage play in the early 1980s, the actress was described by The New York Times as “almost unrecognisable”. Its critic wrote: “The performance is transforming.”

Garcia, the film’s director, told Variety magazine last month that Close is hoping to shoot in Ireland.

The New York Times described the Broadway version as “an oddly haunting piece of theatrical chamber music, at times so low-key as to be dim wattage, but one that holds our attention like a tale told at the fireside”.

Most of the story is set in a hotel in Victorian Dublin where Nobbs finds work as a waiter. The story depicts her confusion over her identity. As she settles into her new role in society, she courts a maid while pretending to be a man and reveals her secret to a guest.
